Whether you’re a budding, or amateur gardener, creating a rose garden in your outside space is a job that’s definitely worthy of your (or our) time. We adore the romantic aesthetic a rose garden brings – oh, and the smell – which is even more reason to get your green fingers at the ready. So, if you need a helping hand making your dream rose garden a reality, read our tips below:

First thing’s first

Before you do anything the best thing to do is get planning. What type of roses do you want in your rose garden? Are you going for a more contemporary vibe, or do you want something more quintessentially British? A rose garden doesn’t have to be potted, you could have different colour roses accenting a framed arch, garden chair or even climbing up the garden shed – it’s completely up to you. We’d recommend doing your research before getting started, maybe even start a rose garden Pinterest board perhaps? Don’t forget to check out your garden’s condition first to find where the best location to start planting is.

Next…

Once you’ve figured out what type of roses you want to plant, think about whether you want the garden to just consist of roses, or if you’d like to mix and match flowers. If this is the case, you’ll need to research companion plants. Companion plants are a group of plants that require the same amount of sunlight and moisture as roses, this makes it easier to maintain the garden as a whole – think lavender and topiary.

How to prep and tend to your roses:

– Prune and cut-back your roses

– Remove any twigs

– Feed your soil – amount depends on what type of soil you lay (contact us for more information)

– Ensure your roses get enough moisture and sunlight

– We’d recommend not pruning your roses in late summer, or autumn, as this would encourage softer growth that’d be killed off when the weather becomes frosty

– If you want to form one fine shrub, plant three of the same variety close together

– Don’t plant roses where you’ve planted before as this may be detrimental to growth of your new roses.
